Creative Sustainability CIC were awarded the contract to deliver a comprehensive community engagement strategy as part of the next phase of the canal restoration project. The CS Community Engagement team are working in partnership with local volunteer-centred, environmental and canal organisations to create a programme of exciting, inclusive and hands-on opportunities for people and communities living and working along the canal corridor.
The partnership’s events programme includes wildlife and nature-based activities along the canal banks, canal archive exploration, heritage walks and stories of the canal and a range of arts and photography workshops in schools, colleges and with the community. We are also delivering canal-based activities in schools, piloting mentor schemes and offering a diverse range of volunteering opportunities.
The project encourages participation from everyone and offers different ways for people and communities to get involved – from inclusive and informative public consultations, to fun, outdoor canal-based activities and events. We are helping people to get active, take part in their community and spend time together in positive ways.
In February this year we adopted Stroud Railway Station to develop community projects at the station and to strengthen the link between the canal and Stroud and Stonehouse railway stations through maps, trails and exhibitions. The aim is to enhance our canal experience and link the two towns, creating a fantastic visitor destination and improving opportunities for local economic development.
