Stroudwater History – Unlocking the Archive
The archive of the Company of Proprietors of the Stroudwater Navigation comprises a large collection of volumes, papers and plans which provide fascinating information about the lives of people living along the Stroud valley during the last two hundred years. To make the information more readily available, volunteers from the Stroudwater Navigation Archive Charity are preparing material for presentation on a new Stroudwater History website and for use in community activities such as talks, walks, lessons and workshops. The aim is to generate interest in the restored canal by giving insights into the lives of people associated with it in the past.
To provide general interest, the website will include pages featuring historical information about places along the Stroudwater Canal and interesting stories about people and events associated with the canal. For those wanting more details, there will be a series of topic-related reviews of activities connected with the working canal and a number of research studies already carried out. For those wanting to do their own research, the website will include a range of resources in the form of extracts, summaries and images of important documents. There will also be pages suggesting how these resources could be used in personal, educational and community projects.
