Archaeologists from Archaeology England, alongside volunteers from Cotswold Canals Connected have been digging at Hydes Basin (Land containing the ‘missing mile’, adjacent to the A38 roundabout).
So far they have uncovered evidence relating to a Romano British settlement including enclosures, ditches and pits, from which they have recovered artefacts such as pottery and animal bone. This material represents domestic rubbish from Romano British people living nearby and will help to understand how they lived, including what they ate, farming practices, potential local industries and trade links.
This knowledge will be built on over the next few weeks as they progress through the site.
